Computing
The following will provide a summary of the programme of study for ICT & Computing. Each module will have a “Big Question” or topic which is linked in some way to the knowledge, key concepts and processes as identified within the National Curriculum or the world of work and business, as well addressing Fundamental British Values and embedding the Pembroke values of Curiosity, Generosity, Wisdom, Passion and Courage. Finally, by the ever-evolving nature of the subject, the ICT & Computing Curriculum at Pembroke seeks to develop each student’s Academic, Social, Cultural and Creative capital, as they prepare to be ready for the challenges of the adult world.
The Importance of ICT & Computing
The purpose of a high-quality ICT & Computing education is to equip students with the skills necessary to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. The study of ICT & Computing has cross-curricular links with mathematics, science, and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. The core of computing is computer science, in which students are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. ICT & Computing also ensures that students become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world. Through regular discussion, students are made aware of how ICT & Computing skills will equip them with the skills necessary for employability in career roles that currently experience a labour or skills shortage, or in careers that have yet to be invented. With this in mind, the study of ICT & Computing at Pembroke dovetails perfectly with our mission to ‘improve the life chances of our students so they become true citizens of the world’.
Curriculum Aims
Learning in ICT & Computing contributes to achievement of the curriculum aims for all young people to become:
- Students imbued with curiosity for understanding the wider world: this is achieved by being naturally curious of the never-ending developments in the world of ICT, Computer Science and Technology, namely through studying ‘ICT in the News’.
- Students who are generous of spirit in their dealings with others in their local, national and international communities: this is achieved by adhering to our motto of ‘Achieving Together’, through listening and respecting each other’s valued opinions and creativity within ICT & Computing.
- Students who show wisdom in their life choices: this is achieved by understanding and applying the fundamental principles and concepts of ICT & Computing, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation.
- Students who are passionate about their future and their place in the world: this is achieved by being responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
- Students with the courage to follow their dreams and pursue life goals: this is achieved by being self-critical and reflective in order to make further improvements, as well as evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems.
